MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger, driven by Kurt Busch in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, was painted with the Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat system from PPG. The Penske organization has utilized PPG coatings systems for their truck lease and racing vehicles for more than 28 years, and all of the Penske Racing vehicles wear PPG coatings systems. The car will compete Sept. 2 at the California Speedway in Fontana, in the Sharp AQUOS 500.
Waterborne specialists at PPG headquarters in Strongsville, Ohio, formulated Penske’s Miller Lite blue for the project. Then PPG Technical Support Specialist Jim Skal traveled to the Penske Racing facility in Mooresville, N.C., where he worked with Cesar Bustos, head painter for the Penske Racing Miller Lite vehicles. Skal showed Bustos the basics of working with waterborne.
“I was amazed at how easy it was to spray waterborne paint,” says Bustos. “It took me a few minutes to adjust to the fact that this was water based, but I was very impressed with how it sprayed and how it looked. The PPG technical staff was able to match the color perfectly. I’m very pleased with the results and I look forward to working with waterborne again.”
When the car hits the track, it will wear the logo for Martin Auto Color, the PPG Platinum Distributor of the Year for 2006, on the trunk lid. Martin Auto Color of Van Nuys, Calif., won the right to have its logo on the car as part of the PPG Platinum Distributor of the Year Award. The car’s rear quarter panel also will carry the Envirobase High Performance logo.
Busch will enter the race fresh from a win Aug. 21 at the 3M Performance 400 at the Michigan International Speedway, his second win in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series during August. Combined with his win at the Pocono Raceway at the Pennsylvania 500, Busch is 12th in the standings, and solidified his position in the title Chase eligibility slot.
